Seattle University Counselors for Social Justice

Moreover, we seek to establish a more equal distribution of power and resources in society through social justice advocacy and politically conscious interventions and strategies. We endeavor to accomplish this goal by using social advocacy and activism as a means to address inequitable social, political, and economic conditions that impede on the academic, career, and personal/social development of individuals, families and communities. Our belief is that social justice advocacy is warranted to right injustices and to improve conditions for those who have been marginalized in society. This is a position that aligns with the American Counseling Association’s (ACA) Code of Ethics which states in section A.6.a, “when appropriate, counselors advocate at the individual, group, institutional, and societal levels to examine potential barriers and obstacles that inhibit access and/or the growth and development of clients” (American Counseling Association, 2005, p. 5).

The mission of SUCSJ is to eradicate society of all forms of oppression through research, education, and advocacy.
